A smashing success as Zoe Hallam moves up the rankings to enter the top 32 in badminton

It’s tough enough having to balance college, coursework and a busy social life, but one student has thrown an extra commitment into the mix… and it’s paying off. Zoe Hallam, a former student of Sandon Business and Enterprise College, has moved into the top 32 players in the UK for Badminton by qualifying for the Senior National Championships.

The event takes place at the Bolton Arena from 3–5th February.

“I qualified by doing well in tournaments and getting my overall ranking up”, said Zoe. “It requires a lot of commitment. I train most days every week, coming to College before going home and doing my coursework before heading out again for training.”

Zoe’s accomplishments have not come without sacrifice. “I frequently have to say no to going out to various social events as I need to keep fit and train hard. I don’t have much free time and it can be frustrating, but it is well worth making the effort”, she added. “My long term goal is to play badminton for England. I have my first training session with the England set up this weekend in Milton Keynes. If I can impress there, then there is a chance that eventually I’ll be competing to get into the final squad. I’m quite nervous about the meet up but at the same time excited.”

Zoe has already tasted success this year having represented the College at badminton, winning the regional qualifiers for the British College Sports National Finals in Bath later this year.
