Glas-going places; Grace Walker awarded a scholarship at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

A-Level Music student, Grace Walker, was able to hit all the right notes in her recent interview with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland after being awarded a scholarship.

The Glasgow based music school, formerly known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, is one of the biggest and most respected music education institutions in the world and has seen many of music’s greats pass through its doors over the years.

Grace, who came to us from Denstone College, is delighted at being awarded a place at one of the most prestigious institutions in the UK. The application process involved an audition which went very well for Grace. “Usually they take a few weeks to make a decision, but they told me straight after the audition that I was accepted which was very exciting. I was then invited to audition to a second panel for a scholarship package worth £1000 per year. I was successful with that audition too. The extra financial help with come in very handy”, she said.

Grace’s good fortunes are down to hard work and commitment to her music. “I play at weekends too”, she added. “On Saturdays I attend a music school from 9am-4:30pm which is another full day on top of college, and on a Sunday I play with a youth orchestra. I really enjoy playing with an orchestra and my long term goal is to be a professional flutist. I would also love to be a concert flute player. I’m hopeful that by going to the RCS, I’ll be able to make some good contacts in the industry and achieve these dreams.” Grace was also very complimentary about the Sixth Form College. “My teacher, Martin Drew, has been very supportive and has helped and encouraged me a lot. The facilities here such as the practice rooms are good, and it is also helpful that I get time to rehearse.”

Martin Drew, Grace’s teacher, was full of praise for his student. “Grace is an exceptionally gifted musician; one of the most gifted I have had the privilege of knowing and teaching in 35 years of teaching.”

Grace will not be the first Sixth Form College student to succeed in getting a place at the RCS. Former student Beki Smith started at the school this year, majoring in composition.
