McFlying high; Young singer’s band enters the final stretch of a competition to support McFly

A local band featuring a Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College student has reached the final stage of a competition

to win a slot supporting McFly on their UK tour. In the Cards, which features former Birches Head pupil Amy Colclough, have finished in the top 50 bands from over 1000 original entrants into the contest.

The contest was run online and required as many people to ‘like’ In the Cards on Facebook. The band finished on 1819 likes which was enough to propel them into the top 50 and into the final round where McFly themselves choose the winner with whom they’ll share stages on their tour.

“We first heard about the competition on Daybreak. Our guitarist Danny is a huge fan of McFly and encouraged us to go for it”, said lead singer Amy. “It was quite simple to enter. We had to upload a music video to Facebook and we had to then get as many people to ‘like’ it.”

The reward will be a big step up from the current gigs that the band play. “We have headlined at The Sugarmill and played there a few times. We’ve also played Fat Cats and The Underground before. We love playing live, the interaction with the crowd is always enjoyable and we performing is quite an adrenaline rush”, she added.

School Liaison Assistant Caroline Cole has seen the band perform before their potential big break. “I first saw them at the launch of the Birches Head Trust, of which the Sixth Form College is a key partner. The rationale of the trust is progression and so seeing the band progress into the next round of the contest is excellent news”, she said.

“We’re nervously awaiting the results but even if we don’t get through to support the McFly, we’ve already achieved something incredible by getting this far”, said Amy. “We do this for fun really. It would be cool if we got signed and played to bigger audiences, but we’re in it for enjoyment most of all”.

Being in a band also poses challenges with demands on time. “We practise on Fridays which allows me to study during the week for my college courses”, she added.

The band are due to find the results of the contest in the next few weeks and are hoping for a local slot. “Even though we could support McFly anywhere in the country, we’re hoping to feature at the gig in Hanley in March at Victoria Hall”, commented Amy.
