Opening doors for the future; Sixth Form College students complete their Open University courses

Four students from the Sixth Form College were this week reflecting on their achievements after completing extra courses with the Open University. Zijan Khalid, Luke Hatcher, Megan Davies and Sam Law have all studied part time courses on top of their lessons at college.

The students studied a range of distance learning courses to suit their interests and aspirations. Luke took up a course entitled ‘How the Universe Works’, Megan looked into ‘Molecules, Medicines and Drugs’, Sam studied ‘An Introduction to Financial Services’ and Zijan worked on ‘Human Genetics and Health Issues’.

“I worked on an anti cigarette campaign at college”, said Zijan. “I was encouraged to look into the Open University coursed my Achievement Tutor, Geoff Willis. I read the course description on the website and thought it would really help my UCAS application. Eventually I would like to work in medicine to it will help towards my career goals too.”

The courses were not without their challenges as the students had to find time in their schedules to do independent study and research, and complete coursework. “It was tough as I worked mostly through half terms meaning that I had to sacrifice my holidays. The final piece of work was a 4000 word essay. I’ve never written anything that long before, so that was a new experience”, added Zijan.

Luke was also pleased with his Open University Experience. “I wanted a challenge and to study subjects that I enjoy further. This course allowed me to do that. Even though this course is more physics based, there will no doubt be crossovers between this course and the Maths course I’m looking at doing at university. I enjoyed the challenge of independent learning and was able to mention this course on my UCAS application”, he said.

Senior Achievement Tutor Geoff Willis was full of praise for the students. “It is a challenge for the students but it is an opportunity for them to study a Level 5 qualification, broaden their horizons and add depth to their subject knowledge. Universities love to see this on an application as it shows a genuine passion for the subject”, he commented.
