Moving on to top universities

Every year we have countless individuals who have collected their results today and will leave the Sixth Form College to progress onto courses at some of the top universities across the country. Here are a small selection of those students who have gained the grades they need for those much sought after places.

David Hibbitts – Currently studying Maths at University of Bath

Achieved:

A* in A-Level Mathematics

A in A-Level Further Maths

A in A-Level Physics

"The transition from college to university was quite smooth. The biggest jump is the living on your own and doing things like cooking for myself. At first I was nervous as it felt strange going somewhere without knowing anybody, but at the same time I was excited about the prospect of university. Everybody is in the same boat so they are willing to make friends with everyone else. I was able to use Facebook to speak to fellow freshers so I knew a few people when I arrived.

Being at Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College prepared me for university. I had lots of help writing my UCAS personal statement and preparing for interviews at the universities I had applied for. I’m also using a lot of the work from my A-Level Mathematics and Further Maths courses as my degree builds upon what I learnt at college.

I did plenty of research and attended a few open days and looked at the league tables to see what was strong in my subject area."

Jonathan Jones – Currently studying Maths at Durham University

Achieved:

A* in A-Level Mathematics

A* in A-Level Further Maths

A in A-Level Physics

A in A-Level Computing

"I was always aiming to study Mathematics I wasn’t sure at which university. I wanted to move away and go somewhere that had a good social scene and lots of events on campus. One thing I liked about Durham was the college system that they have there.

In terms of research, I looked into a number of universities and went to all of their open days. It wasn’t until I actually went to Durham that I chose to go there. I had advice and help with my personal statement from my tutors which helped a lot. The jump from college to university is manageable and you have to adapt quickly. For instance, I found that it is essential to take good lecture notes to keep up with work.

At first I was really nervous. It was different to starting at Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College because I didn’t know anybody at Durham whereas at college, I knew a few people. It was very easy to make friends though as everybody is in the same position. Now I have settled in, I can say that I am loving the social side of university and I am meeting so many new people.

I would advise students to look closely at course content and more than anything, choose a subject which really interested in."

Alice Bridgwood - Currently studying Philosophy at University of Cambridge, Trinity College

Formerly of Alleyne’s High School

A Levels results A* A* A

Alice collected a superb set of A Level grades with two A* grades and an A. In September, she will take up her place at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, reading Philosophy. During her time at the Sixth Form College, Alice won the college prize and the best overall entry from all colleges at ‘The Manchester Metropolitan University Creative Writing Final’. Judges, who included the Professor of English at MMU and Terry Fox, the Cheshire Poet Laureate, found her poem ‘profoundly moving’ and ‘beautifully written’.
