100 budding second year Business students had the chance to get up close and personal with local and national employers on Monday night as the Sixth Form College hosted our inaugural ABLE event. Employers in attendance included Mitten Clarke, JCB, DHL and Wardell Armstrong who spoke to students about career paths to give them the chance to find out what skills they need to succeed. Former Tile Giant Chief Executive, Mo Iqbal, was also on hand to give advice to students who were thinking about starting a business in the future.

“The event was designed to give students the chance to network with targeted employers. It also gave them the opportunity to identify the challenges to enable them to do their own self analysis on the skills they’ll need to succeed and help give a focus on the year ahead”, said Jos Singh Sanghera, the Curriculum Area Leader. “We had some big businesses in who gave us some really good feedback on the event. I’ve already had emails from them saying how impressed they are with the calibre of our students and as a result of Monday’s event, they are keen to work with us on future projects”.

The ABLE initiative has been running throughout the week with A-Level Computing students visiting the Jaguar factory to look at how computing works in the industry. Representatives from KJD Freeth Solicitors presented to Law students about what you need to establish a career in the legal profession. “The students were able to get an insight into a range of industries over the week which will give them an idea of what directions are available when they finish their studies with us”, added Jos. “We’re hoping to run a similar event towards the end of the year for first year students”.
