Art and Photography students see the bigger picture in Birmingham

AS Art and Design, and Photography students visited Birmingham last week to visit galleries to find references for their Unit 2 externally set assignment that they started on the 1st February. The students had to select a topic from a set number of questions.

The first stop was Birmingham Museum and Art gallery which houses a wide variety of art, ceramics and exhibits; every thing from Renaissance masterpieces to Egyptian mummies. Students also got to see exhibitions including ‘Lost in Lace’, Da Vinci drawings and the Staffordshire Hoard.

The next gallery visited was the Public in West Bromwich, which is a very modern gallery full of interactive light and sound displays. That intrigued photography students and allowed them to experiment with many of the techniques they have learned in the past few months. It is a building full of light, colour and inspiration that had students interacting with their surroundings.

The final gallery visited was the New Art Gallery Walsall, which has a wide range of modern art. It displays work in a way that challenges the viewer and encourages them to engage with the work. It also provided views across the whole of the Black Country from the top floor

Helen Morgan, Course Leader of Creative Media said “We try to find a range of galleries so every student can find something to inspire their work and the range of work and environments we have experienced today has definitely done that." Graeme Reed Curriculum Manager for Art and Design said “Students benefit from seeing Art work in the flesh there are many things this allows them to observe that they can not do purely using books and the Internet.”

Laura Cook, a former Cheadle High School student AS photography student said “I have so many ideas from all of the galleries I can’t wait to get back to college and start the project.” Rebecca Sherrat, another AS Art student said, “Some of the large paintings in the Public are amazing. I have never seen anything like them before and the gallery itself".
