Clubbing together; VIP Students raise funds for the Rotary Club’s Shelter Box campaign

VIP students were out in force again on Friday campaigning for a good cause. This time the beneficiaries were the Stoke-on-Trent Rotary Club as they raised funds to purchase a Shelter Box to be sent out to victims of disaster somewhere in the world. The day featured a number of fundraising activities including the ever popular sale of pick ‘n’ mix in the Main Atrium, a raffle for a Pizza Hut voucher and a magazine written by the students entitled MoodleMag.

The main event was the teacher ‘bushtucker trial’, in which several teachers were challenged to chow down a range of horrible chocolates concocted by the students themselves. Flavours mixed in with the chocolate included tomato puree, cheese and chive, mustard and mayonnaise.

Drama and Expressive Arts Teacher Jayme Edwards, who put herself forward for the chocolate challenge, said; “I have one word to describe the challenge; disgusting!!!” Kirsty Wright, a former student of the Discovery Academy and one of the VIPs running the event, said; “It was a lot of fun. We gained experience in running and managing an event.

Fellow VIP and ex-pupil of Clayton Hall, Hannah Bailey, who devised the horrible chocolates, added; “I really enjoyed fundraising for the day and coming together with friends to help a good cause. Coming up with the ideas for chocolates was a lot of fun too. The worst one by far was chocolate and pickled cabbage which Simon Ball ended up eating.”

The Friday event raised £179 which will go towards the Stoke-on-Trent Rotary Club buying a new Shelter Box. “We’re very proud of our achievement as a group”, added Hannah. “It’s not easy as we have lessons and coursework and as a group, we aren’t always in the same classes, so we had to rise to the challenge of pulling something together with little time, but we did well and the day was a success.”
