On Friday 3rd of February, three former students came into college to chat with current A2 Film and Media students about their university experiences and give some crucial interview tips. The students; Rebecca Hilton, Jake Leese and George Smith were all Film and Media Studies students last year and were all College Oscar winners or nominees. Fittingly, they are now all studying Media (Film) Production at Staffs University and loving every minute of it.
Film Teacher, Nikki Simpkins initially asked the students in to give her A2 students feedback and advice on their creative film projects, chat to them about university life and the all important interview process. They then went next door and speak to one of Kim Finn’s A2 Media groups. “After speaking to the current university students, there was something of a ‘shocked silence’ in the room. Clearly many of the A-Level students anticipated university to be very different in terms of the workload. They were expecting the university students to have been to more parties but they’ve actually been working very hard”, said Nikki.
Becky, Jake and George were able to communicate the reality of university life using their extensive lists of pre-production documents that they have to produce to illustrate the point. Whilst doing this, their enthusiasm and joy in their course was still present; they clearly love what they are doing.
Despite the initial shock many of the students found the advice and information useful. “It has made me realise that there are a lot more consequences for not submitting work on time and you have to be much more organised and responsible at university.”, said Jon Cooper, a student currently studying A2 Media Studies.
