Thursday saw the return of the College’s annual prize giving presentation, recognising and celebrating the achievements of a selection of the high flying students currently studying with us. In attendance were the winners and their families, the students’ proud tutors and representatives from the sponsors of individual awards who kindly made donations which made the celebration possible.

The event kicked off with a wonderful musical performance from Grace Walker who treated the audience to a rendition of Debussy’s Syrinx on the flute. It was then over to the centre stage for welcoming addresses by Director of Student Services Nigel Mansfield, Principal Helen Pegg and Chair of the College Corporation, Dr Charles Freeman.
As each prize was awarded to the respective students, a citation (which the winners got to keep as a souvenir) was read out by Helen detailing the students’ achievements before being handed their prize on stage by the sponsors.

The students were exceptionally proud of their achievements and all were delighted to receive their awards. Josh McGlyn picked up the Old Hanliensian Prize for Foundation Student. “It’s a great achievement for me”, he said. “I’ve had various pressures and challenges to overcome and receiving this award makes it feel like all the hard work has really paid off. It would have been easy to have given up but I kept going and I’m glad I did”. The event was extra special for Josh as his parents had travelled down from Scotland to see his presentation.

Neelam Rai was another prize winner, being awarded both the Hilda Hulme Prize for English and the Maurice Mosley Memorial Prize for Contributions to the College Community. “I won community award for the input I’ve had to College life”, she said. “I’ve been a VIP student, taken part in the Student Forum and Student Council, and even been down to Parliament to lobby MPs over the loss of EMA. It has made all of my hard work worthwhile.”

Student Governor Torben Schwartz had a double celebration this week after being offered a place at Cambridge University to study Philosophy. His award on the evening was the Old Hanliensan WM Wilson Prize for Outstanding Performance. “I’m very happy. It’s great to be a part of the success of the College”, he commented.

The ceremony was rounded off with closing speeches from Nigel Mansfield, Helen Pegg and Dr Charles Freeman, once again underlining the significance of the achievements of the prize winning students. “We have around 1700 students here at the College”, said Dr Freeman during his closing speech, “and although we’re celebrating a select few tonight, everybody who comes here achieves and that’s something we can be proud of. We are a college which really cares about its students”.
Helen Pegg also took time to thank the staff at the College for their hard work over the course of the students’ time with us. “I would like to thank all the staff of the College for their dedicated commitment to supporting students to achieve their full potential”, she said.
