A selection of students have embarked on the Rise To: Enterprise Challenge this year, and have made an encouraging start to their campaign.
The Rise To: Enterprise Challenge is open to students at colleges and universities nationwide and puts creative and marketing skills to the test. It requires participants to run a campaign to encourage the public to say thank you to someone or something. The team who collects the most messages of thanks to their chosen subjects wins the contest overall, but there are also awards for creative ideas, leadership, teamwork and entrepreneurship.

This year, the students have chosen to say thank you to diversity. To show their thanks, people are being asked to give a ‘thumbs up for diversity’ by adding a thumb print to the students’ canvas and to sign a compliment slip with a personal message of thanks. The challenge now is to find 3,000 signatures over 6 weeks to put them on the road to victory in the overall competition. This is a task that the students are relishing.
Amy Chappell, who currently teaches Business Studies and is overseeing the project said; “I’ve been really impressed with the enthusiasm of the students, they’ve been professional and have been meeting 3-4 times a week to discuss ideas and get things moving. The students are in charge and make all of the decisions themselves”.
Rojgar Azad, who came to us from Birches Head High School, is one of the students involved in the scheme. She said; “I wanted to challenge myself and do something different that could go alongside my studies. It is a lot of fun, I enjoy working in a team and I have already made new friends. We chose diversity as Stoke-on-Trent and the Sixth Form College are very multi-cultural and we thought our campaign would relate to a lot of people. The Challenge has also increased my confidence as I’ve had to approach and talk to people that I don’t know”.

Jos Singh Sanghera, Curriculum Area Leader for Maths, Business and Technology added; “They’re getting real world experience of teamwork, decision making, problem solving and planning which they can use in the future for job and university applications. 3000 signatures is a lot to get in the time we’ve been given, but we’re looking at engaging the local community to see how many we can get”.
