Students take the Elm by pitching their ideas to a real life client

BTEC Interactive Media Production students this week took their ideas into the real world as they pitched them to a group of professionals from Elmfield Training.

The students’ task was to create and design a poster, web mail out campaign and an idea for a short video to promote the company’s IT department internally to staff working in the field or from home. It gave the students a taste of working for a real life client.

“It was a good experience”, said Farai Samunyai, who came to us from the Co-operative Academy at Brownhills and is currently studying on the course. “The task was to develop the ideas ourselves and present to the panel. We had work and sketches that we’d done and during the process, we learnt how to organise and present work in a way that an external group could understand”. “I personally was terrified at the thought of presenting”, said former Wolstanton High School student Lindsay Mountford, who was also part of the team. “But I’m glad that I did it and I can use the experience in the future for job interviews and other scenarios where I need to present”.

Elmfield Training were very impressed with the calibre of students. Kim Hill, who works as a Financial Analyst at Elmfield, said; “I can’t believe how good the work is, their ideas are better than any graphics company. Originally we were going to choose only the best marketing campaign, however having listened to all of the students’ ideas, we’re thinking about running a different one each quarter.”

The students’ tutors, Kimberly Finn and Leigh Johnson, were both very proud of the accomplishments. Kimberley said “The students have been working hard researching marketing campaigns and developing their own ideas for the project. They have an array of creative ideas from portraying the IT team as superheroes to producing a parody of a charity advert. When they presented to the staff from Elmfield, all the students were professional, speaking clearly, explaining thoroughly and answering all questions the staff posed. Both Leigh and myself are incredibly proud of them.”
