By all accounts, a good visit – Deloitte presentation puts learning paths into perspective

Last week, Accounting and Business students at the College had the opportunity to attend a presentation by the internationally renowned accountancy and finance firm Deloitte.

The talk was very popular and was attended by 100 students from AS & A2 Accounting and Business, and a range of other courses. Topics covered included what the company does as well as career opportunities for 18 year old school and college leavers as they look to double recruitment for this age bracket over the next few years. Deloitte believe that there are many talented 18 year olds leaving college and they are showing their faith in them by both recruiting them and financing their college training to make them qualified chartered accountants. In addition to this they also recruit 1000 university graduates nationally per year which put into perspective the potential progression routes if they chose to attend university.

Everybody who attended found the experience very useful. Tutor Ross Cornes said; “It was fantastic that a big international company was keen to come in and support the college and great for students to learn about career opportunities for both college leavers and graduates”

Paula Simoyi, a student who joined us from James Brindley High School found the talk highly informative. “I was surprised as I’d originally thought that a company of that stature was beyond our reach. I will be looking into applying for a placement during the third year of my sandwich course at university”.

Another student who was equally as impressed by the presentation was Josh Phillips; “I thought it would be really hard to get a job there and I wouldn’t stand a chance” he said, “But after that talk, it made me realise that there are a range of roles at the company that I could apply for and so long as I study and pass my course, these are achievable”.
