10 AS Business Studies students went to Manchester last week for the Entrepreneur Live! event which was run by Tutor2u and featured a range of speakers from the world of business.
The format was interactive with established entrepreneurs giving an account of their lives in business and how they started with the intention of inspiring the next generation of business owners.
“The visit was very useful as it coincides with their Unit 1 module on starting a business”, said Simon Mansell, the Course Leader for GCE Business. “I think they’ve come away with a much better idea of how start up businesses begin and establish themselves”.

Speakers for the day included Kirsty Henshaw, who won investment from Duncan Bannatyne and Peter Jones on BBC2’s Dragon’s Den with her frozen desert company with whom students were able to engage with in a Q&A session after her talk. Also present were Tom Ball, who currently runs a web development company having sold off successful companies in the past, Tim Roupell, a former investment banker who began a sandwich company after being made redundant in London, and Adam King who was a big hit with our students having started a tailoring company.
As well as being able to interact with entrepreneurs, students were able to get involved themselves with a “hit or miss” game in which they had to give their verdict on six new inventions including a dog window for a fence and an iPod toilet roll dock for the bathroom.

The event was a big success for the students who went. “I don’t think the students expected it to be so interactive. That format worked really well for everyone involved and students were able to get a lot from the day and they’ll use the knowledge gained from this and the experiences of the speakers in their studies” added Simon.
