Politics Trip to London

Where better to learn more about British Politics than from British Politicians in our capital city?

Ten A2 Politics students from the college headed south to join other A Level students from across the country at the annual A Level Politics Conference.

The conference was held at Westminster Central Hall and featured quite a variety of politicians, old and new, all willingly giving of their time to offer the students a live taster of what political speaking and debating is really like. Each of the speakers talked for a time, giving their view on a topic currently in the news and then took a number of questions from the floor.

Perhaps the liveliest and most controversial of speakers was Respect MP, George Galloway, who was greeted by a chorus of good spirited ‘meowing’ following his short stay in the Celebrity Big Brother House back in 2006. George talked passionately of his views on the Iraq war and the situation in Afghanistan and the Congo.

Jack Brereton, a student from the college who was on the trip said:

“By attending this event we gained an insight into the workings of politics and the current issues that politicians are facing. The experience has enabled us to expand our knowledge, inform our thinking and exam preparation. From the conference we were able to see the wide variety of different political ideologies and how different politicians can develop individual opinions on diverse issues. We were able to see the different extremes of politics ranging from George Galloway to Tony Benn, it was very useful to see what we have learnt in class shown in the real world and how the systems work in practice.”
