Earlier this term a group of History and Classics students who were interested in Archaeology visited a local dig taking place in Hanley. They were able to observe the process of surveying and excavating in process as the building of the new bus station was getting under way.
Charles Turner, Curriculum Manager for History commented that it had been a good opportunity provided through links developed with the Stoke Museum’s service.
“We are hoping to re-introduce AS Archaeology and this group of students had shown a keen interest in the subject. It was great that the local Archaeology team in Stoke could involve us at such short notice.”

Alathea Fernyhough has studied both History and Classics and said; “ I found the trip to the local excavation in Hanley to be both useful and informative. Being able to talk to local Archaeologists was extremely useful as it gave me an insight into studying and working within Archaeology. Also, being able to see the more physical side of Archaeology was useful, especially for somebody wishing to study the subject at University.”
Tom Beech, also considering Archaeology at University commented, “The Archaeology trip was a very good insight into the subject. We were shown around a dig sight which used to be a 18th century house. The archaeologists explained how civilians used to live pre world war one. The whole experience was extremely helpful for students wanting to carry on archaeology at university and was also an enjoyable experience which enhanced the students understanding about the subject.”
