The Young Curator Project pushed further forward this week with the students’ exhibits becoming live and going on display ay the Potteries and History Museum in Hanley.
The exhibition follows a second visit by the History students in June during which they got to see what goes on behind the scenes at the City’s centrepiece museum. Activities included looking at exhibits not yet on public display, seeing the process from a curator’s point of view, deciding which artefacts to display, and how to research and write articles to accompany the items for the viewing public to read.

Curriculum Manager Charles Turner said of the visit; “The students found the visit to be a real eye opener, seeing exactly how much work goes into putting on a public display. There is more to consider than they first thought. For instance, when researching for their projects, they found a panel from a Spitfire which they thought would make a good display but as it had been subject to high levels of radiation, it would not be suitable.”

The students’ task was to find an artefact of interest, undertake research and develop written material to sit alongside the exhibit. Those displays are now ready to welcome the viewing public and complete the students’ curator experience. Hannah Bailey, a student participating in the project said; “I enjoyed the Young Curator Project because it reminded me of my childhood. I was able to exhibit a Royal Doulton figurine similar to one which I remember my grandmother having and loving dearly. The research element of it was great too as I am aiming to study a History degree at university and research is a skill I’ll be using. I’ve already used my experiences on my UCAS form and it will make me stand out.”
