MP Teaches a History Lesson

Dr Tristram Hunt, MP for Stoke Central, returned to the Sixth Form College to teach a History class for AS students.

It is becoming an annual tradition for Dr Hunt to come along to the Sixth Form College to teach a subject he is passionate about – History. Last year, Historian Tristram visited the Fenton site to teach a lesson to our current A2 History group. He was delighted to have the opportunity to return again this year to our brand new building, to repeat his session with our new intake of History students.

However, Dr Hunt did not come alone…

…he brought along his Personal Assistant, Carrie Martin, former Sixth Form College student who left the college in 2007 and the BBC Midlands Today Film Crew.

Liz Copper, Presenter on BBC Midlands Today, was keen to put together a piece around the government education white paper and the changes to the National Curriculum. The intention was to focus on subjects such as History and why our students choose to study these options at advanced level, rather than traditional subjects such as Maths, English & Science. The TV crew filmed Tristram’s lesson and then interviewed some of our students to get their opinions on the matter.

Jack Spencer, formerly of Clayton Hall Business & Language College, said about the lesson:

“It is always interesting when someone else comes into a class and gives a presentation as we see a different view point and teaching technique. Tristram has quite a unique teaching style where he asks the class a lot of questions and tries to get everyone involved in the topic. He is obviously passionate about history and I particularly enjoyed how he tied his lecture into what we are studying in class but linked it all in to lhow it relates to local history here in Stoke-on-Trent.”
