Philosophy Conference

Seventeen A2 Philosophy students went to Staffordshire University for a conference on Nietzsche.

Having switched to the Nietzsche option this year, the department was delighted to make links with the local university, whose Philosophy professor, Douglas Burnham, is a leading expert on the works of this controversial philosopher. In fact, Professor Burnham’s book has proved to be invaluable in assisting teaching staff in getting to grips with the module.

The session at the university involved a 1 hour lecture to the group delivered by Professor Burnham on Critical Approaches to Nietzsche. This was followed by a group seminar on different aspects of the lecture which enabled students to participate and get a real taste for university life.

University staff commented favourably on our students’ levels of interest and engagement. Chris Eyre, who accompanied the students on the visit, said:

“This event was a real success both in terms of developing understanding of Nietzsche and also in giving students a glimpse of university life. Hopefully this has developed both confidence and subject knowledge. We are likely to be making more links with the university during the coming year.”

Students were also very positive about the experience.

Jack Davis, formerly of Newcastle-under-LymeSchool, observed that: “It was a thought provoking session.”

Fellow student Kelisha Thames, a former pupil at St Peter’s High School & InternationalHigh School agreed with Jack saying that:

“It was really useful to get a different angle on this topic.”
