World Development Conference With Clare Short

The college hosted a World Development Conference on Tuesday 17th November and welcomed guest speakers Dr Deidre McKay, Clare Short and Dr Trevor Brown.

Students from the Sixth Form College currently studying World Development AS and A2 level, were joined by a selection of year 10 and 11 pupils from Wolstanton, St Peter’s and Madeley High School.

The whole day conference began with a presentation by Dr McKay, Senior Lecturer in Social Geography and Environmental Politics at Keele University. Her presentation aimed to get the students thinking carefully about many of issues faced by people around the world. In smaller groups the students then took part in interactive workshops, exploring key ‘World Development’ topics such as - Biofuel production, preventable diseases and UK government international development policy.

The highlight of the event was a presentation by the main speaker, Clare Short, MP and Secretary of State for International Development 1997 -2003.

Following Clare’s presentation the students took full advantage of a lengthy question and answer session where they asked a number of intelligent probing questions about topics that are clearly important to young people.

Head of World Development at the Sixth Form College, Tars Sandhu, organised the event. He said:

“This is the first conference of its kind here at the Sixth Form College and it was the ideal opportunity to raise the profile of World Development as a crucial subject in all our lives. It was particularly fantastic to welcome Clare Short to the college and hear her share with the students some of her experiences as International Development Secretary.”

Dr Trevor Brown ended the day with a final presentation about World Development, giving each of the students more information about the World Development AS/A2 courses offered here at the college.
