Antimatter Matters; Visiting Professor discusses the differences between left and right

This week, 30 A2 Physics students had the chance to engage with a Professor of Physics from the University of Huddersfield when Professor Roger Barlow gave a guest lecture at the College.

The lecture was based around the differences between left and right hands, and the structure of particle physics which would lead to the students looking at what physically makes an opposite. In this case, they discussed clockwise and anti-clockwise and the North and South Poles.

“The objective of these sorts of lectures is to show young scientists that physics has a part to play in the real world and that it is alive in everything we do”, said Professor Barlow. “Sometimes it is good to look outside the book in terms of what we teach to keep physics exciting and enjoyable”.

Students were also able to quiz Professor Barlow as he stayed behind after the session to answer questions and debate answers.

Timothy Sit was a student who attended the lecture. He said; “It was really interesting and gave us some food for thought in terms of future progression. A lecture like this gave us an idea of what studying Physics at university could be like and what we could potentially do in terms of research as graduates.”

“Hearing research presented from a first hand perspective by those who carried it out was also very useful”, Timothy added.
