Three of the college’s top AS Chemistry students were selected to compete in the Midlands Heat of the Schools’ Analyst Competition 2011 at Keele University.

The trio proudly represented the City of Stoke on Trent Sixth Form College Science Department - who have built strong links with Keele University and were invited to attend by Chloe Harold on behalf of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Twenty schools and colleges entered A-level students into the Midlands Heat and it proved to be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience for all involved. The students were given the opportunity to use equipment which is not currently available in schools or college such as uv/visible spectrophotometers and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). They were tasked with solving a problem of a forensic nature - a large quantity of dead fish had been found and the competition was all about finding out who was responsible, therefore acting as acting as Environmental Scientists for the day.
Luke was delighted to take part in the challenge, “The Young Analyst competition was a great opportunity to use and build on the skills developed in our AS chemistry classes, but we were able to utilise new equipment available at Keele University.”
Megan said; “Although the task they set us presented us with challenges, the day was rewarding and insightful.”
Shannon agreed; “I enjoyed working together as a team using a variety of analytical techniques, it was a really good experience even though we did not win the competition."
Dave Tabbinor, Curriculum Manager for Chemistry said; “This competition provides an opportunity for students to see the end product of some aspects of A-level chemistry and allows them to work independently; having to make their own decisions"
The winning school on the day was Stamford who had travelled further than any of the other teams – the Sixth Form College Chemists will no doubt be back again next year!
