Seminar in Sociology

Over 70 students studying A2 Sociology at the Sixth Form College and the Sixth Form Centre, Burslem, attended a seminar on Wednesday 8th December, delivered by Professor David Voas BSc(Econ), MSc, PhD.

David is currently Simon Professor of Population Studies at The University of Manchester and was delighted to visit the brand new Sixth Form College and conduct three seminars for the students here. David was appointed to a chair in the Institute for Social Change in 2007 and serves on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Sociology and the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion and on the council of the British Society for Population Studies.

During this week’s seminar, David was debating the topic of Secularisation, and discussing his own research in that specific area. He has published work in Sociology Review and also recently broadcasted on BBC Radio 4, so he has been a really useful asset for students in terms of applying his ideas within this particular module - SCLY3 Beliefs in Society.

Sarah Mills, Curriculum Manager for Sociology, said:

“A few years ago I established a link with David during a Phillip Allan Conference. Over the last two years, students from The Sixth Form Centre have visited Manchester University to hear his lectures and he has visited them in Burslem. David was extremely keen to come to the new building once it had opened and take the opportunity to speak to a larger number of students . His seminar has added value to students in terms of their identification with material on the secularisation debate. Through this seminar they were given the unique opportunity to speak directly with a leading author within sociology, and ask him questions on the topic area which is important to their studies.”
