Sprinting to Success with the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College

First-year BTEC Sport and Exercise Science student from the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College, Lewis Smith, showcased his exceptional talent on Saturday 16th March, at the prestigious under 19 English Schools Cross Country Championships held at Pontefract Racecourse. Lewis earned his spot in this national event after a fantastic performance at the Staffordshire Schools Cross Country Championships.

Amongst stiff competition from the best runners across the country, Lewis displayed remarkable determination and skill, securing an impressive 174th position out of 308 participants. This achievement is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport.

Lewis, a member of the Elite Scholarship Programme at the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College, expressed his gratitude for the support, stating,

Representing Staffordshire at the English Schools Cross Country Championships was an incredible experience. I’m honoured to have had this opportunity, and I’m grateful for the support of my college teacher and coaches. The Elite Scholarship Programme has been instrumental in my development as an athlete and student, providing resources and support that have helped me excel both on and off the track.

But Lewis’s journey doesn’t end there. On the 20th April, he will be competing in the AOC Nationals Cross Country Final in Nottingham. Having clinched victory in the West Midlands Regional Championships last November, Lewis is poised to represent his region with pride.

Joining Lewis in this prestigious event are fellow qualifiers Jack Jones and Caitlin Taylor. As they prepare to face off against the nation’s top competitors, the entire college community rallies behind them, wishing them the best of luck in their mission for success.

David Hardwick, Health, Wellbeing, and Sport Coordinator at the Sixth Form College, praised Lewis’s dedication, saying,

Lewis’s performance at the English Schools Cross Country Championships is a testament to his hard work and commitment to his sport. His success is well-deserved, and we’re thrilled to see him represent Staffordshire on the national stage. He’s an inspiration to his peers and a shining example of the talent we have here at Sixth Form College.
