The College Futures Programme is designed to provide all students with the best opportunities and support to ensure you achieve your maximum potential in your chosen subjects and careers.

Where “Futures Programme” appears on your timetable this will be dedicated time for you to focus on you and YOUR FUTURE (for example, researching university courses, writing a personal statement or a CV, webinars, online courses, podcasts, etc)

The SFC-STUDENT FUTURES TEAM (In Microsoft Teams) is where you will find information and resources that you can use to work on your personal development.

You can:

Check out the monthly theme and get started on developing your career and building your skills and knowledge.
Go to the Careers channel to book a careers guidance appointment or for general resources on HE, Apprenticeships, Work Experience and more.
Access a calendar of career-related talks – everything from Police Apprenticeships to Degrees in Games Design. There is something for everyone.
You will receive notifications of vacancies for apprenticeships, employment and work experience.

Work Experience

All students at The City of Stoke on Trent Sixth Form College are supported to undertake work experience throughout their time at the college. This may be face to face and/or virtual work experience.

This helps to improve employability skills and get that vital hands-on experience.

Some courses include significant work placements to allow students to develop key skills required to have a successful career.

Our Work Experience Coordinator will provide guidance for you to follow to find a placement opportunity. She will work with you and the employer to ensure it is a safe place to gain an insight into the career of your choice.

A work placement will give you the opportunity to:

Develop the key skills needed within your career choice
Develop your employability skills and professional behaviours.
Discover new talents.
Strengthen your CV.
Improve your knowledge of the industry.

Apprenticeships and employment with training are a popular options for our leavers.

To be successful you will need:

To be committed to becoming an apprentice/finding employment.

A current up to date CV – that you review regularly.
Evidence of employability skills.
Able to get a good quality reference from college or from your work experience placement/employer (if you have a part-time job). Remember attendance, good participation and engagement count for your future.

In exchange for your commitment, the Futures Team will support you to find an apprenticeship or employment in the industries that you want to work in.

We will support you in preparing a CV.
We will help you prepare for interviews and improve your interview technique.

Unifrog

All students have their own personal login for the UNIFROG careers platform. Unifrog brings into one place every apprenticeship, university course and college course in the UK, as well as resources to help students extend their studies and stand out from the crowd when it comes to applications. The platform makes it easy for students write their CVs and Personal Statements and record their key skills.

It also gives students access to local labour market information, providing an insight into local and national sectors of growth, salaries and the skills that employers are looking for.

Labour Marketing Information (LMI)

This is an important consideration when you are planning your future career, it helps you to understand where future growth is predicted to be which means better employment opportunities. It also helps you to understand what kind of salaries can be expected in different sectors and for different jobs, this means you can make a realistic future career plan linked to what you want to achieve in your life.

Our students have access to local labour market information via the UNIFROG portal. This provides an insight into local sectors of growth, salaries and skills that employers are looking for.

Included below is a tool called LMI for All. This portal connects and standardises national sources of high quality, reliable labour market information to help inform your career decisions.

As employers look for increasingly higher skill levels and new and exciting job opportunities emerge requiring highly skilled employees, we prepare our students to be well placed to take advantage of these opportunities.

We support our students to progress their education to higher and degree level where it is appropriate to do so. We provide opportunities to showcase what is on offer from a wide range of universities and from higher and degree level apprenticeship providers.

The Futures team and Progress Coach Team provide information and support to enable our students to progress. This includes:

A programme of speakers from local and national universities
Support to research courses and places of study
Regular updates about application deadlines for higher and degree apprenticeships
Support to complete university applications
Support to develop personal statements
Information about applying for funding from Student Finance England

You can book an appointment to speak to our careers advisor throughout the academic year on a one-to-one basis. You can drop into the Futures Zone and book yourself an appointment.

Award Sponsorship

We have an annual awards event for students who have displayed outstanding attainment, achievement and progress. We would welcome sponsorship for specific awards from employers and will be happy to discuss what specific subject/awards would be most appropriate for businesses on an individual basis.

Work Experience Opportunities

We are always looking for local employers to support Sixth Form College Students by offering work experience opportunities.

Students across all courses benefit enormously from a short period of work experience of between 5 and 10 days (either in week blocks or 1 day per week). This time provides students with an insight into a business and sector, in order to help them gain some entry-level skills, to experience the ‘soft-skills’ required in the workplace and to help build confidence. Work experience is also a useful tool to help students to identify where their future career interests lie and is therefore invaluable in its contribution to our students at this stage of their education.

BUSINESS PRESENTATIONS, FUTURES EVENTS AND STUDENT SITE VISITS

The College Futures Team are always looking for opportunities that will allow our students to interact with local and regional employers. These interactions allow students to get an insight into local job and career opportunities and provide valuable insights that can help as they make key decisions on the career paths that they want to explore. Meeting students provides businesses with a platform to increase knowledge of their business within the student community and can provide fruitful links for part time employment and long term training and career opportunities.

We welcome businesses in to College on a regular basis to attend either Futures Events evenings or to present to students on their businesses. We also welcome the opportunity for our students to visit business premises to get a feel for the workplace, it’s requirements and culture.
