BEFORE – IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR ME?

Before starting the BTEC Level 3 AAQ in Health and Social Care, students should have a strong interest in people, wellbeing, and how health and care services support individuals across the lifespan. A basic understanding of human biology (e.g. body systems and health) and the ability to write clearly and analytically will be helpful. Students should be prepared to apply theory to real-world scenarios, work independently on coursework, and take part in discussions about sensitive topics such as illness, safeguarding, and equality. Good organisation, communication skills, and a willingness to reflect on practice are important for success in this course. Although no specific subjects are required, having studied GCSE Health and Social Care, Biology, or Citizenship can provide a useful foundation.

BELONG – WHY STUDY THIS WITH US?

At the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College, this two-year programme blends academic study with practical experience to prepare you for careers in health, care, and allied professions. You’ll follow a structured timetable of lessons, case studies, research projects, and vocational skills sessions. Core topics include human lifespan development, anatomy and health, and person-centred practice, alongside an optional unit such as health promotion or safe environments. Assessment is a mix of externally marked exams and coursework.

Throughout the course, you’ll build vital skills such as empathy, critical thinking, interpreting health data, academic writing (including Harvard referencing), and applying theory to real-world care situations. Expert teachers use strategies like retrieval practice, personalised feedback, and digital tools to support your progress and prepare you for university, apprenticeships, or employment in health and social care.

Your learning experience is enhanced with opportunities such as guest lectures, interactive field trips, simulated clinical practice, community placements, webinars, and enrichment activities. These experiences bring the subject to life, giving you both knowledge and confidence as you prepare for your next step.

BEYOND – WHERE CAN THIS COURSE TAKE ME?

Completing this qualification gives you a strong academic and vocational grounding in health and care, opening doors to some of the UK’s most in-demand careers. Many students progress to university to study Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, or Allied Health Professions, while others choose apprenticeships or employment within the NHS, local services, and the wider care sector.

Whatever your chosen path, this course equips you with the skills, confidence, and practical experience to succeed in higher education, specialist training, or directly in the workplace.
