Course Overview
This two-year course provides the equivalent of 2 A Levels (Diploma) or 3 A Levels (Extended Diploma). The course includes a mixture of practical sessions and theory lessons.
The BTEC in Sports Coaching and Development is a practical, career-focused qualification designed for students who are passionate about working with others to improve sporting performance and participation.
This course prepares learners for roles in coaching, teaching, leadership, and the wider sports industry by developing both their theoretical knowledge and hands-on coaching skills. Students will learn how to plan, deliver, and review coaching sessions, understand the principles of athlete development, and explore the organisation and management of sport in the community and professional environments.

BEGIN – IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR ME?
This course is ideal for students who enjoy working with people, have a passion for sport, and want to inspire and lead others through coaching. It suits those who prefer practical, hands-on learning and are interested in developing real-world skills for careers in sport, fitness, or education. You must have an interest in sports coaching as this is the main focus throughout the course of study and contributes to the most points on the qualification.
Students should have a genuine interest in sport, physical activity, and helping others improve their performance. They should enjoy communicating, leading, and working as part of a team, and be enthusiastic about developing practical coaching skills alongside academic knowledge.

As the college has an association with Stoke City FC, you will also visit some of the facilities at the club to witness what job opportunities are available in such an organisation. The college also has links with some of the local sports coaching providers. Numerous National Finals take place at Fenton Manor and you will also have the opportunity to support these events during the course of study to improve your skill set. You will be actively involved in sport and given the chance to experience a wide range of sporting activities in state-of-the-art facilities.
BEYOND – WHERE CAN THIS COURSE TAKE ME?
Taking the BTEC Sports Coaching and Development course is suitable for progression to university but also provides the vocational skills and experience to enter employment. Some students progress into apprenticeships in coaching, PE support roles, or directly into employment within schools, clubs, leisure centres, or national governing bodies. This course specifically looks at developing sports skills in areas such as: Coaching, sports development and careers in the sports industry.
