3D Design – Product Design & Architecture
A Level 3D Design is a dynamic and hands-on course for students who enjoy sketching ideas, exploring structures, and creating with their hands. It covers a wide range of disciplines including architecture, product design, sculpture, and spatial design.
Students learn to take ideas from concept to prototype using both traditional techniques and modern technologies such as CAD, laser cutting, and digital rendering.
Working with materials like wood, clay, acrylic, and card, they explore form, function, and construction while developing skills in creative problem-solving, research, drawing, modelling, and critical thinking. The course also involves studying influential designers, architects, and artists to inspire personal creativity. Design Process – developing ideas from initial sketches through to final outcomes.
3D Visual Communication – sketching, technical drawing, rendering and presentation skills.
Material and Process Exploration – working with wood, metal, plastic, card, foam and mixed media.
CAD and Digital Design – using industry-standard software for design development and 3D modelling.
Model Making and Prototyping – from quick concept models to refined prototypes using hand tools, laser cutting and 3D printing.
Contextual Research – studying the work of designers, artists and architects to inform your ideas.
Sustainability and Functionality – considering user needs, materials and environmental impact in your design solutions.
Personal Project (Component 1) – an in-depth, self-directed project based on a theme or issue that matters to you.
Externally Set Assignment (Component 2) – a practical project set by the exam board with a timed final outcome.
